DT: Local gas prices continue to drop

The average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline was hovering at around $2.58 Monday morning, Oct. 20, the lowest average since late July of 2007, according to DaytonGasPrices.com.

Just a month ago gasoline was selling locally for $3.92 per gallon locally, but the trend lately has been toward overall low prices and great deals in pockets where competition among neighboring gas stations is high.

The hot spot for competition in the 48 hours leading up to Monday morning appeared to be northeastern Montgomery County where prices of $2.35 and $2.36 were spotted in Huber Heights, north Dayton and Riverside. Prices in Englewood and Vandalia were not far behind with prices of $2.41 and $2.42.

The highest prices reported in the last couple days were $2.75 to $2.79 at spots scattered around the area.

Gasoline prices in Dayton are well below prices nationwide right now. The national average price Monday morning was $2.91 compared to $2.58 here.

But the trend, both nationally and locally, has been toward dropping prices as the cost of crude oil continues to slip worldwide. The last time average prices dipped to the $2.58 range was late July of 2007.

DaytonGasPrices.com bases its tracking of gasoline prices on voluntary e-mail reports from motorists who notify the Website of prices they spot in the area.
