MW: U.S. markets lower Monday
 
U.S. markets started lower Monday in the second of two straight trading weeks shortened by holidays.
In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial fell slightly, down 13.94 points, 0.16 percent, to 8,501.61. The Standard & Poor's 500 slid 0.32 percent, 2.78 points, to 870.02. The Nasdaq composite index fell 7.30 points, 0.48 percent, to 1,522.89.
The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury bond rose 17/32 to yield 2.079 percent.
The euro rose to $1.4274, compared to $1.406 Friday. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar fell to 90.27 yen, up from 90.66 yen Friday.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei average gained 7.65 points to 8,747.17, up 0.09 percent.
