MW: Dollar index dips slightly after jobless claims

By Nick Godt
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar dipped slightly after the Labor Department said applications for initial jobless benefits declined by 38,000 to 550,000 in the latest week. The dollar index (DXY 77.86, +0.35, +0.45%) , which measures the U.S. unit against a basket of six major currencies, stood at 77.844, down from 77.881 ahead of the data. Analysts surveyed by MarketWatch expected claims to fall to 578,000. The dollar rose earlier after both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged.
