BERLIN (AP) — The 16-nation euro held onto recent gains against the U.S. dollar on Friday in the wake of positive economic news from Europe's largest economies.
In morning European trading the euro bought $1.4264, about the same as the $1.4265 it purchased in late New York trading on Thursday. The British pound rose slightly to $1.6565 from $1.6556 the night before, while the dollar rose to buy 95.29 Japanese yen from 95.13 yen in New York.
The dollar slid Thursday after Germany and France — Europe's two biggest economies — both reported a return to economic growth. At the same time, the U.S. said retail sales slipped unexpectedly last month.
