FX : Brazil Real Opens Slightly Stronger On Renewed Risk Appetite

Brazil Real Opens Slightly Stronger On Renewed Risk Appetite

By Alastair Stewart

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--The Brazilian real opened slightly stronger against the U.S. dollar Tuesday as global investors recovered some appetite for risk.

The real stood at BRL1.861 per dollar in early trade on the BM&FBovespa exchange, stronger than Monday's close of BRL1.867.

International risk appetite stabilized following overnight gains on Asian equities and decent European data. As a result, worries that the global economic recovery may prove both tardy and weak fell into the background.

Meanwhile, U.S. inflation data provided few scares. U.S. producer price data and housing starts were weaker than expected. U.S. PPI came down 0.9% versus consensus for -0.4% and housing starts fell 1% compared to an expected 2.7% rise.

Meanwhile, local inflation remained under control. Inflation in Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo, said its consumer price index rose 0.43% in the period, compared with a rise of 0.35% seen in the four weeks ended Aug. 7.

The figure was in line with market forecasts for an increase of between 0.35% and 0.45%.
