MW : Regis swings to quarterly loss on one-time items

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Hair-salon operator Regis Corp. (RGS 14.23, +0.18, +1.28%) said it swung to a fourth-quarter net loss of $4.6 million, or 11 cents share, from a profit of $23 million, or 54 cents a share, earned in the year-earlier quarter. Excluding one-time items such as the write-down of the company's 30% ownership interest in Provalliance, the company would have earned 59 cents a share. The consensus forecast was for a profit of 47 cents a share, according to a poll of eight analysts conducted by FactSet Research. Revenue for the quarter fell 2.5% to $625 million. Same-store sales declined 4%. The company reiterated its forecast for same-store sales to be down 3% to up 1% in fiscal 2010 and to improve throughout the year. In the first quarter, Regis will report a pre-tax charge of roughly $18 million for make-whole premiums and other fees.
