NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Discount retailer Dollar Tree Inc. (DLTR 50.35, +2.45, +5.12%) said Wednesday that its second-quarter profit jumped to $56.9 million, or 63 cents a share, from $37.6 million, or 42 cents a share, a year earlier. Sales rose to $1.22 billion from $1.09 billion. It sees third-quarter profit in the range of 58 cents to 64 cents a share with comparable-store sales rising in the low-to-mid single digits. It forecast sales of $1.19 billion to $1.23 billion. For the year, it forecast profit of $3.10 to $3.25 a share. Analysts, on average, estimated Dollar Tree would earn 54 cents a share each in the second quarter and in the third quarter and $3.01 for the year, according to FactSet.
