European shares turn lower
 
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares couldn't hold onto early gains on Tuesday, with mineral extractors such as copper miner Vedanta Resources (UK:VED 1,733, -56.00, -3.13%) , down 5.6%, among the worst performers on the first day of the new month. Banks were also weak, with HSBC Holdings (UK:HSBA 657.50, -14.00, -2.08%) (HBC 53.92, -1.06, -1.93%) down 3.1%. The U.K. FTSE 100 fell 1% to 4,857.79, the German DAX index fell 1% to 5,408.17 and the French CAC-40 index lost 0.7% to 3,627.69.
