MW: Nikkei advances as trading resumes post holiday

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Japanese stocks posted modest gains early Thursday as trading resumed for the first time this week after a holiday-extended weekend, with technology and telecommunication shares higher while commodity-linked companies declined. Exporters and financials were mixed, as Wall Street stocks retreated after the Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged, as expected, and said it would extend its debt purchases into the first quarter of 2010. The Nikkei 225 Average, which ended down 0.7% on Friday, was recently up 0.3% at 10,403.79, while the broader Topix Index advanced 0.3% to 942.17.
