SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar index (DXY 76.88, +0.23, +0.30%) came off highs reached earlier in trading as U.S. stocks started Monday's session with gains. The index, which measures the U.S. dollar against a basket of its rivals, rose to 76.888, up from 76.774 in afternoon U.S. trade Friday. Earlier, it had reached 77.255. The dollar gained against the euro and the British pound, but fell against the Japanese yen. Helped by a spate of new mergers, the S&P 500 (SPX 1,050, +5.81, +0.56%) opened 5 points higher at 1,050.
