LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares rose modestly on Wednesday, the last day of the third quarter, with miners and industrial firms in the lead as copper miner Antofagasta (UK:ANTO 755.50, 0.00, 0.00%) advanced 1.3% and conglomerate Siemens climbed 1.4%. Companies updating investors included Man Group, up 2.4% after it said that investor sentiment is improving, while Marks & Spencer (UK:MKS 370.70, -4.03, -1.07%) shares fell after the retailer posted a drop in U.K. quarterly comparable sales. The U.K. FTSE 100 index rose 0.1% to 5,166.13, the German DAX index rose 0.4% to 5,734.93 and the French CAC-40 index climbed 0.5% to 3,831.21.
