MW: U.S. stocks hold to losses after Philly Fed

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The major U.S. stock indexes remained down but stayed off the session lows Thursday after the Philadelphia Federal Reserve's survey showed a weaker expansion in October. The S&P 500 was 4 points, or 0.4%, lower at 1,088. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded 27 points, or 0.3%, at 9,992. Earlier the blue-chip average had slipped to 9,979. The Nasdaq Composite slid 7 points, or 0.3%, to 2,166. On the S&P 500, financials and tech led decliners, dragged down by a nearly 6% drop in Capital One Financial slid 7 points, or 0.3%, to 2,166.
