BLBG: Sugar Output in Brazil Center South Falls on Rain

By Lucia Kassai

Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Sugar output in Brazil’s Center South, the world’s largest producing region, fell in the second half of October after rain hampered harvesting, industry association Unica said.

Production in the region, where about 90 percent of Brazil’s sugar is made, fell to 1.67 million metric tons between Oct. 16 and Oct. 31, from 1.92 million tons in the year-earlier period, Unica said today in an e-mailed report.

Cane growers harvested 30.2 million tons in the period, down 10 percent from a year earlier, the group said. Ethanol output dropped 28 percent to 1.24 billion liters (327 million gallons), Unica said.

Sugar production totaled 24.7 million tons since March 1, Unica said, up 9.1 percent from last year. Ethanol production declined 5.2 percent to 19.2 billion liters while cane crushing rose 7.2 percent to 442.6 million tons.
