The Sensex ended the day with a loss of 70.82 points, or 0.42% at 16,979.83 after touching a high of 17,098.79 and a low of 16,958.41. The broad-based NSE Nifty fell 10.35 points, or 0.20% at 5,051.90 after hitting a high of 5,079.30 and a low of 5,041.65.
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Motors (3.03%), Reliance Capital (1.64%), Tata Steel (1.63%), Infosys Technologies (1.39%), ITC (1.37%), and Jaiprakash Associates (0.81%).
On the other hand, Reliance Infrastructure (3.42%), Reliance Industries (1.72%), Larsen & Toubro (1.70%), ICICI Bank (1.63%), Grasim Industries (1.40%), and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.37%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Overall market breadth was positive. Out of the total 2,807 stocks traded at BSE, 1,619 advanced, 1,104 declined while 84 remained unchanged.
