AN: Rupiah weakens against US dollar on Dubai crisis
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The rupiah weakened against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market here on Tuesday morning on the Dubai financial crisis.
The Indonesian currency traded Rp9,475-Rp9,485 per US dollar, down 25 points from Rp9,450-Rp9,465 per US dollar at the market`s close a day earlier.
Investors were rather cautious in putting their money in the domestic market, and they even tended to sell their shares, Edwin Sinaga, a domestic money market observer, said here on Tuesday morning.
However, Sinaga, concurrently president director of PT Finan Corpindo Nusa, considered the rupiah`s depreciation normal despite the Dubai financial crisis.
He believed that the Dubai fallout would not affect world economies such as China and India, as well as Indonesia. Their economies were even better off, he added.
He, however, was worried that investors, would divert their funds to buying euros and US dollars as had happened in 2008.If this happened, the rupiah would plunge very deeply, he said.
"We are optimistic that the market will welcome the world economic growth, while the financial crisis in Dubai is just an old problem which surfaced only now," he said.(*)
