NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks began strongly higher Tuesday ahead of economic reports on housing and manufacturing. Materials and energy shares fronted the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU 10,452, +106.86, +1.03%) gained 109.96 points to 10,454.80. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,108, +12.19, +1.11%) rose 12.11 points to 1,107.74, while the Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,171, +25.91, +1.21%) added 25.31 points to 2,169.91.
