MW: Oil and natural gas stocks rise, oil service shares dip

By Steve Gelsi, MarketWatch
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Energy stocks traded mixed on Thursday after falling in the previous session as crude oil futures treaded water and oil service shares fell.

Bank of America's plan to pay back $45 billion in TARP money and a drop in jobless claims stoked modest rises in shares of natural gas and petroleum producers.

The NYSE Arca Oil Index (XOI 1,080, -4.24, -0.39%) rose 0.2% to 1,086.

The NYSE Arca Natural Gas Index (XNG 505.43, -2.67, -0.53%) rose 0.4% to 510.

The Philadelphia Oil Service Index (OSX 189.33, -2.38, -1.24%) dipped 0.2% to 191.

Among stocks on the move, Goodrich Petroleum (GDP 22.61, +0.46, +2.08%) rose 4.5% after the company said it'll boost production in 2010 by up to 25% while keeping its capital spending flat.

Denbury Resources (DNR 13.32, +0.14, +1.02%) rose 0.3% to $13.22 a share on plans to pay $431 million in cash and stock to buy a 95% working interest in the Conroe Field near Houston from private firm Wapiti Energy
