BS: Canada Stocks Rise With Higher Oil, Copper and Gold Prices
By Matt Walcoff
Dec. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks rose as commodity- linked stocks gained on higher oil, copper and gold prices.
Canadian Oil Sands Trust advanced 1 percent as oil futures climbed before a report expected to show declining inventories. Goldcorp Inc. increased 1.9 percent after its bid for Canplats Resources Corp. was topped by another suitor.
The Standard & Poor’s/TSX Composite Index added 51.55 points, or 0.4 percent, to 11,679.53 at 9:37 a.m. in Toronto.
The benchmark index has jumped 29 percent this year, which would make 2009 its best year this decade, as commodity prices have rebounded on signs of recovering economic growth and Canadian financials have emerged from the financial crisis without a failure or bailout.
