MW: Taiwan's exports surge 52.6% in December on year

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- The value of Taiwan's export orders jumped a record 52.6% in December from the year-earlier period, helped by a surge in shipments of information technology and electrical products to China, according to data released Wednesday by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Shipments for the month were valued at $31.73 billion, rising slightly from November's $31.26 billion. Analysts had expected shipments of about $31 billion for the month, according to the median forecast of analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires. When calculated in Taiwan's domestic currency, the value of December's exports were up 48.6% from a year earlier, the ministry said.
