LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares were lower in early trading on Wednesday, with autos the worst performers as Renault (FR:RNO 37.06, -1.35, -3.50%) shares fell 2.7% after a broker downgrade. Elsewhere, Deutsche Boerse (DE:DB1 54.43, -0.61, -1.11%) shares fell 1.5% after it warned that it will take write downs in its 2009 earnings while chip equipment maker ASML Holdings (NL:ASML 23.63, +0.95, +4.19%) rose 1.8% after it swung to a fiscal fourth-quarter profit. The U.K. FTSE 100 index declined 0.3% to 5,495.15 and the German DAX index lost 0.4% to 5,950.96.
