MW: U.S. stocks add to gains after ISM, construction

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks added to gains after midmorning reports on manufacturing and construction. In volatile trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU 10,153, +85.25, +0.85%) recently traded 78 points higher at 10,145 compared to a gain of 73 points just ahead of the 10 a.m. releases. The Institute for Supply Manufacturing said its January factory index jumped to 58.4%, topping views of 56%. But a separate report showed construction spending fell 1.2% in December, much worse than expected. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,085, +11.28, +1.05%) was recently 0.8% higher at 1,082. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,161, +13.84, +0.65%) gained 8 points to 2,156.
