BLBG: Copper Post Jump In Profitability On High Copper Prices
 
Southern Copper posted significant appreciation in its fourth quarter and full year results for the period of 2009. Sales were $1,136.0 million and $3,734.3 million, respectively, compared to $449.7 million and $4,850.8 million in the 4Q08 and the full year 2008. Company said that the cost reduction helped in improving the results, improved prices of Copper also came in to support the profitability margins.

Southern Copper Corporation is one of the largest integrated copper producers in the world and currently has the largest copper reserves.

Commenting on the Company's results for fourth quarter, German Larrea, Chairman of SCC's Board said: �The strong Company's fourth quarter results reflect the recovery of copper and other metal prices, as well as company wide productivity improvements, including gains from the modernization of equipment and increases in by-products production."

Production of Copper in the fourth quarter was at 126088 tonnes up 0.7%as against 125160 tonnes in the corresponding period 2008.Zinc production also increased by 0.8% in fourth Quarter.

In Indian futures markets, Copper prices which saw bottom fishing at lower end is still trading on shaky grounds and the prices are facing correction from the top. The prices recovered towards Rs 316 per kg during early trading hours but supplies from their have seen Copper crumbling towards Rs 312.50 per kg down Rs 3.5. Supports for the contract are expected to emerge at Rs 308-309 levels.
