ST: Oil giant due in court over sea pollution

BP has denied allegations that it allowed oily water to escape into the sea at the Sullom Voe oil terminal in Shetland.

Oil giant BP was due to appear in court on Thursday over allegations that it had polluted the sea at the Sullom Voe oil terminal in Shetland.

At an earlier appearance before Lerwick Sheriff Court the firm pled not guilty to allowing oily water to pollute the sea in autumn last year.

Anti pollution teams and officers from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) were took several days to clear the area when several hundreds of litres of oily water escaped following a period of heavy rain on 7 October.

BP is charged with contravening the water environment regulation 2005 by allowing a mixture of water and crude oil to escape from the oily water drainage system into the surface water drainage system and thereafter into the sea and contaminating a beach nearby.

The trial is expected to last one day.
