MW: Indian shares range-bound in early trading

By V. Phani Kumar
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Indian shares moved in a range around break-even early Monday as trading resumed after Friday's holiday, with automobile and infrastructure shares rising to cheer last week's industrial output data. The 30-stock Sensex fell 0.2% to 16,118.90, while the 50-constituent S&P/CNX Nifty fell 0.1% to 4,821.30, with both benchmarks reversing early gains. Shares of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. rose 0.9% and auto maker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (MAHD.Y 21.26, 0.00, 0.00%) added 1.3%, after economic data showed Friday that India's industrial output soared 16.8% in December from the year-earlier period, the highest pace in a decade. But Bharti Airtel Ltd. shares fell 2.2%, capping broad-market gains, on reports that the mobile operator has bid $10.7 billion to acquire most of the African assets of Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Co.
