Triad gas prices fell another 4 cents per gallon during the last week, continuing a trend that has brought the cost of gas down from highs last month above $2.70 a gallon.
A gallon of regular gasoline cost on average $2.569 as of Feb. 14, compared with $2.610 a week earlier. The price is almost 15 cents lower than a month ago, when a regular gallon of gas cost on average $2.717.
Gas prices remain much higher than a year ago, when the average gallon of gas cost $1.894.
The average price of fuel has been falling for the last several weeks, following several weeks of increases that quickly pushed a gallon above $2.70 for regular gasoline and more than $3 for premium. AAA Carolinas blamed the increases on the fact that cold weather in January lead to more need for heating oil, rather than gasoline production, and speculation among oil futures traders because of the weak dollar and signs the economy might be improving.
Statewide, the average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.619 as of Feb. 15, down from $2.655 a week ago, and about 12 cents lower than $2.742 a month ago.
The national average also declined to $2.616, compared with the average of $2.652 a week ago. It also is down almost 14 cents compared to an average of $2.753 a month ago, though still higher than the average of $1.966 a year ago.
The average price in the Triad for mid-grade is $2.726 per gallon as of Feb. 14, a decrease from $2.770 a week earlier, and down from a month ago, when a gallon was $2.883. The average gallon of premium also continued its decline after it peaked above $3 last month, falling to $2.846 per gallon, compared with $2.892 a week ago. It has also fallen about 22 cents compared to a month ago, when it was $$3.010.
Diesel prices in the Triad declined more slowly, falling to $2.828 per gallon, compared with a week ago, when they were $$2.839. They were down compared to a month ago, they were $2.893.
