LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares rose on Tuesday, extending this week's gains, with shares of Barclays (UK:BARC 291.10, +16.25, +5.91%) (BCS 16.67, -0.01, -0.06%) up 8.7% after reporting a better-than-expected pretax profit for 2009. Along with banks, miners were also gaining ground, with Anglo American (UK:AAL 2,415, +66.50, +2.83%) shares up 2.4% after agreeing to sell the European operations of its Tarmac division. The U.K. FTSE 100 index rose 0.9% to 5,214.97, the German DAX index climbed 1.2% to 5,577.50 and the French CAC-40 index rose 1.1% to 3,649.02. |
