NEW YORK, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. markets jumped higher at the opening bell Tuesday, displaying pent up demand after the President's Day holiday.
In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average added 70.52 points, 0.7 percent, to 10,169.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 added 7.27 points, 0.68 percent, to 1,082.78. The Nasdaq composite index added 14.23 points, 0.65 percent, to 2,197.76.
Judging from a recent pattern, U.S. markets should close higher Tuesday, having closed lower Friday before the holiday break and having failed to put together two consecutive days of gains or losses in the past five sessions.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury fell 6/32 to yield 3.717 percent.
The euro rose to $1.365 from Monday's $1.3601. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 90.1 yen from Monday's 89.98 yen.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index added 0.21 percent, 20.95 points, to 10,034.25.
