Taipei, Dec. 9 (CNA) The U.S. dollar fell against the New Taiwan dollar Thursday, dropping NT$0.151 to close at NT$30.555.
Turnover totaled US$609 million during the trading session.
The greenback opened at the day's high of NT$30.706 and moved to a low of NT$30.081 to close at NT$30.555.
Dealers said the New Taiwan dollar extended its momentum as other Asian currencies rose against the U.S. dollar.
The local bourse hit a 30-month high, lending further support to the New Taiwan dollar. Foreign banks still served as the major buyer of the local currency, the dealers said.
The benchmark weighted index closed up 0.57 percent at 8,753.84 Thursday.
Taiwan's central bank again intervened in the local foreign exchange market in late trade to boost the value of the U.S. dollar to above the NT$30.50 level but lower than NT$30.70, a level the market believes the central bank has tried hard to maintain in recent sessions, the dealers said.
They said it appeared that the central bank had lessened its grip on the exchange rate to some extent as foreign funds continued to enter the local market. (By Frances Huang) ENDITEM/J
