NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar rose in early trade Thursday, after the Labor Department said jobless claims fell by 17,000 to 421,000 in the latest week. The dollar index (DXY 80.34, +0.35, +0.43%) , which measures the U.S. unit against a basket of major rivals, rose 0.1% to 80.08. The euro fell 0.2% to $1.3231. The British pound fell 0.1% to $1.579 after the Bank of England kept monetary policy unchanged on Thursday, as widely expected.
