NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar fell against rivals currencies Thursday after U.S. data showed weekly jobless claims fell to their lowest level since July 2008. The dollar index (DXY 79.49, -0.31, -0.39%) , which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, fell to 79.584, from 79.788 late Wednesday. The euro (EURUSD 1.3298, +0.0075, +0.5673%) rose to $1.3271 from $1.3219 Wednesday.
