TH: Pound rises after split vote on interest rates

One member of the nine strong policymaking committee at the Bank of England voted for an interest rate rise this month in the first split on the committee in almost a year.

Kristin Forbes, an external member of the monetary policy committee, voted to raise rates by a quarter point from the current record low to 0.25 per cent, the Bank revealed.

It was the first dissent since July 2016, when Gertjan Vlieghe voted to cut rates in the immediate aftermath of Brexit — a month before the rest of the committee joined him. It was the first vote for an increase since Ian McCafferty in January last year.
