NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar came off earlier highs on Thursday, after the Philadelphia Federal Reserve said its manufacturing index unexpectedly turned positive in July. The dollar index (DXY 78.56, +0.09, +0.12%) , which measures the U.S. unit against a basket of six major currencies, stood at 78.616, off an earlier high of 78.620 ahead of the data. Separately, the Conference Board said the index of leading economic indicators rose in 0.6% in July, its fourth consecutive monthly gain.
