NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures added to gains after the government said initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell by 33,000 to a seasonally adjusted 521,000 in the week ending Oct. 3. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected a smaller drop to 540,000. Futures for the S&P 500 index (SPX 1,058, +2.85, +0.27%) were up 10.60 points, or 1%, at 1,064.20, compared with 1,063.10 ahead of the data. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU 9,726, -5.67, -0.06%) were up 79 points, or 0.8%, at 9,752, while those for the Nasdaq 100 rose 15 points, or 0.9%, to 1,723. |
