The JSE's fortune changed on Friday afternoon and the bourse closed in the red as investors took profits.
At 5.00pm the JSE all share index had fallen 0.71%.
Resources were down 1.68%.
Banks lost 1.40% and financials dropped 0.85%, but industrials edged 0.42% higher.
Anglo American plc dropped 3.48 rand, or 1.18%, to 292 rand and BHP Billiton shed five rand, or 2.26%, to 215.91 rand.
Sasol fell 4.80 rand, or 1.60%, to 295.80 rand.
Gold miner AngloGold Ashanti shed 11.09 rand, or 3.68%, to 289.90 rand, Gold Fields fell 1.75 rand, or 1.71%, to 100.50 rand and Harmony slipped 2.30 rand, or 2.85%, to 78.50 rand.
Lonmin eased 8.79 rand, or 4.37%, to 192.50 rand.
Among industrials on the JSE, SABMiller gained 2.31 rand, or 1.12%, to 209.25 rand and British American Tobacco advanced 3.27 rand, or 1.31%, to 253 rand.
Standard Bank moved 1.30 rand, or 1.31% lower, to 98.20 rand, Nedbank slipped 3.10 rand, or 2.55%, to 118.40 rand, and Absa lost 2.49 rand, or 1.96%, to 124.51 rand.
Construction group Murray & Roberts 89 cents, or 1.60%, to 56.38 rand, and Aveng profited 1.51 rand, or 3.75%, to 41.75 rand.
Telecommunications group MTN Group picked up one rand to 117.50 rand.
