MW: Banks drag on Indian shares, metals stocks rise

By V. Phani Kumar
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Indian shares slid lower Thursday as banking stocks declined in line with the weak regional markets, though gains posted by commodity producers in the wake of strong gold prices limited losses. The 30-stock Sensex was recently down 0.1% at 17,184.96, while the 50-share S&P/CNX Nifty dropped 0.1% to 5,103.30. Shares of ICICI Bank (IBN 38.82, +0.37, +0.97%) fell 0.6% and HDFC Bank (HDB 136.82, -1.81, -1.31%) dropped 0.8%, while Sterlite Industries (SLT 18.54, +0.04, +0.22%) rose 1.2%.
