ENM: Gold surges on strong global cues

NEW DELHI: Gold prices surged by Rs 240 to 16,800 per ten gram in the national capital today on brisk buying by retail customers and jewllers for the upcoming marriage season amid a strong rally in overseas markets.

Silver also witnessed heavy demand from industrial units and coin makers and recorded handsome gain of Rs 600 to Rs 26,400 a kg.

Marketmen said hectic buying of the precious metals by retail customers and jewellers in tandem with a firm trend in the global markets mainly pushed up gold and silver prices.

Gold traded at 1,109.15 dollar an ounce in the overseas markets.

They added that the domestic market further witnessed a strong demand in the wake of the upcoming marriage season.

Standard gold and ornaments soared by Rs 240 each to Rs 16,800 and Rs 16,650 per 10 gram respectively while sovereign gained Rs 100 at Rs 14,000 per piece of eight gram.

In line with a general firming trend, silver ready spurted by Rs 600 to Rs 26,400 and silver weekly-based delivery by Rs 640 to Rs 26,180 per kg.

However, silver coins continued to be asked around the previous day's level of Rs 33,300 for buying and Rs 33,400 for selling of 100 pieces.
